Family - Music In A Doll's House (1968)

"A lot of progheads will discuss endlessly about whether Family is progressive or not , but by the time their debut album was released in 68 , they were certainly considered groundbreaking and considered as one of the leading exponents of the underground scene (the first name of the Prog rock or art rock back in the 60's) and throughout their career, all of their albums (bar the last one) will hold some interest for progheads. One of the main characteristics of Family is the strangulated vibrato voice of their manic/frantic frontman Roger Chapman, but reducing this group to just that would be of a great injustice. Many great musicians came and went but the nucleus of Chapman, Townsend and Whitney remained to assure constant quality. Their unique sound was due to a rather odd line-up with Jim King as wind player but Grech also doubling on bass and strings. Unfortunately both will leave relatively soon in Family's career" -Sean Trane- ProgArchives

Timothy Leary & Ash Ra Tempel - Seven Up (1973)

"This album features none other than Timothy Leary, the famous LSD guru! He was in exile in Switzerland, and in fact, ASH RA TEMPEL had to record this album in Switzerland because Leary would have been arrested if he ended up in Germany. Anyway, this album really was done under the influence of LSD. Leary would spike the cans of 7-Up that the band members would drink with LSD, and then let them play. The first half of the album featured a bunch of blues songs, but never let that deceive you! After only a couple minutes, all hell breaks loose with the most relentless electronic effects that jut won't let up! Every time you think the band is starting to rock out or play the blues, it goes right back to LSD land just that fast! The second half of the album is more conventional ASH RA TEMPEL, keeping with the early '70s Krautrock sound (reminding me of early TANGERINE DREAM). Grossly underrated stuff, as far as I'm concerned." - ProgHead

Frame - Frame Of Mind (1972)

"FRAME was a German band formed in the early 1970's by Andy KIRNBERGER [guitars, vocals, piano], Cherry HOCHDöRFER [keyboards], Peter LOTZ [bass, vocals, percussion], Dieter BECKER [vocals, percussion] and Wolfgang CLAUS [drums, percussion]. In 1972, they released their debut album, 'Frame of Mind', produced by the infamous krautrock producer Dieter Dierks.

The band was short-lived-- 'Frame of Mind' was to be their only album, and the 5-piece dissolved soon afterward. However, unlike many other bands of the period, a few of the members continued playing music; both Hochdörfer and Claus appear on fellow Marburg band PELL MELL's 1978 effort 'Only a Star'.

Stylistically, FRAME is a fair representation of the wild jamming of Krautrock but the influence is based on heavy psychedelic bands as IRON BUTTERFLY, VANILLA FUDGE and DEEP PURPLE. A slant towards a heavier sound is tempered by a healthy dose of keyboards: the organ, piano, mellotron and spinet all credited to various band members. A pleasant alternative from Deutschland for fans of the heavy progressive/psychedelic sound." - The Whistler

The Moody Blues - Days Of Future Passed (1967)

"How can one belittle one of the sacred albums that started it all? Still a masterpiece forty-three years later, DoFP is still one of my favorite start-to-finish listens--and there aren't many of those out there, believe me! A masterful blend of orchestral music with folkish pop song 'interludes' engaging one on a journey through a single day of towing the line of modern human life while occasionally being reminded of the ubiquitous and omnipresent background, the matrix of life, as provided by good old Mother Nature. Beautiful poetry, beautiful voices--spoken and sung. Beautiful music throughout all culminating in one of the greatest mood shapers of all-time: "Nights in White Satin" (album version only, please). I cannot recommend this album highly enough." - BrufordFreak-ProgArchives

Be Bop Deluxe - Modern Music (1976)

" Bill Nelson's music in the mid 70s was a stew of glam, pop and prog, with no particular emphasis on either. A restless musical spirit, he's always been difficult to pin down in terms of genre, which is why his fans love him. What's indisputable is his talent for melody and his great lead guitar playing. Modern Music is one of the finest examples of these things. While the band had started as a Bowie-sque glam group and moved on to pomp and prog stylings on their next two albums (you may remember their hit "Ships in the Night"), Modern Music finds Nelson streamlining the band's sound, which he would do even more on 1978's Drastic Plastic. He ended up being on the first wave of the new wave, so much so that he's never been given due credit for it.
Modern Music cuts back on the guitar heroics but features some of Nelson's best, most moving songs." - Heptade - ProgArchives

Area - Are(A)zione (1975)

"The Italian founding band Area in 1975 produced Are(A)zione, one of the more important live albums from Italy. That this band is a Communist band is clear. But if you don't have problems with the political influence and inclinations in musical field Area is a fundamental band. So this live is a great document. The music is a collection of great songs.." - Ely78-ProgArchives

Black Widow - Return To The Sabbat (1969)

"Black Widow may be 70s rock legend most undervalued but don't forget that they remain true pionners in term of obscure, evil influences in popular & rock music. Musically it's certainly not Heavy metal...their sound is more a kind of late 60s powerful rock with an obvious progressive and medieval flavor. We can hear a lot of organ, flute, sax...put together to create a very dark music which was quiet unusual at this time. The tiltle track is a funny incantatory hymn to the sabbat...I consider this album as their best. It's by far better than their more conventional "IV". Prog and 70s rock lovers can't be disappointed!" - philippe-ProgArchives

"CARAVAN were the other half of the WILDE FLOWERS - the SOFT MACHINE being the other - that originated in Canterbury, Kent. The band itself was originally formed in early 1968 by guitarist/vocalist Pye HASTINGS, keyboardist Dave SINCLAIR, bassist/vocalist Richard SINCLAIR (later of HATFIELD & THE NORTH, NATIONAL HEALTH, etc.), and drummer Richard COUGHAN. Novalis - Sommerabend (1976)

" Is this really a masterpiece? Yes, yes, I'm afraid it is. Novalis' sound on Sommerabend reminds the listener of a lighter, happier, friendlier Pink Floyd. It's very atmospheric and has an almost dreamlike feeling. In fact, the name "Sommerabend" ("Summer Evening") is very fitting. The album's sound does indeed evoke visions of a dreamy summer evening. Picture it: it's warm, it's beginning to get dark, and you're laying outside, taking in the fleeting smells and sounds that surround you. That is what the album is about, and that is what it gives.

I give all three tracks on this album five stars. While the music is not particularly complex nor technically innovative, it doesn't have to be. That simply isn't the point of the album. The band successfully manages to induce the very visions and emotions it intended to, without ever getting boring or clichéd. If you like emotionally moving music and don't need endless fidgety guitar loop-de-loops to keep you interested then I would definitely recommend this album. Instant masterpiece." - Morrel-ProgArchives

Wishbone Ash - New England (1976)

"By far the best Wishbone Ash Album. Yes it is more rock oriented and I was a real fan of heavy rock when this album was released. Still it has some smooth and soft songs. This is one of the albums that make me listen to progressive music because this is still the old Wishbone Ash with guitar driven music. The studio sound was very new for the time and it is very distinct. This is Wishbone Ash at their best. This is all to say about an album, which shaped my progressive taste of rock." - Rolle-ProgArchives

Missing Link - Nevergreen! (1972)

"This early 70's jazz-rock band from Munich has had a rather short career; in fact, it lasted the space of an album called "Nevergreen", released in 1972. Then the band broke up, most of their members scatttering about in various directions. They consisted of guitarist Markus Sing, soprano and alto sax player Gunther Latuschik, bassist Dave Schratzenstaller, vocalist Gabriel Dominik Mueller, future SAHARA drummer Holger Brandt, and keyboard player Dieter Miekautsch who would later join MISSUS BEASTLY and then EMBRYO.
They played typical 70's German progressive jazz rock in the style of THIRSTY MOON, early EMBRYO and KRAAN. Almost each of their album's seven tracks seems to explore a different genre, at times centering around some jazzy sax riffs, at times surprising the listener with a quiet piano solo; or else venturing into loud, heavy rock outbursts mixed with acoustic guitar. The overall feel is quite jazzy and what stands out most is the interplay between guitar, sax and keyboards.
Should appeal to fans of EMBRYO and THIRSTY MOON as well as to some ARDO DOMBEC and XHOL fans." - Lise (HIBOU)

Be Bop Deluxe - Sunburst Finish (1976)

"As mentioned in the description of Be Bop Deluxe the albums of most interest to prog.rock fans are Futurama and Sunburst Finish. Not really prog.rock as we know it, but astonishing guitar albums to say the least. An excellent mixture of hard rock a la Thin Lizzy, a little Steve Howe and a little Roxy Music...and a touch of Eno. Tracks flow in and out of one another giving it a concept album feel. Ships in the Night was a big hit, and rightfully so. One of the greatest guitar tracks ever written Crying to the Sky is included here as well. Bill Nelson(guitarist) has indicated this is a personal favourite, and I can see why. Nothing wrong with personally saying it's the greatest when it's true. :-) 5 Stars for great guitar record...4 Stars for Prog.Rock" - Gooner-ProgArchives

Epsilon - Epsilon (1971)

"Initially working under the name Karthago and with a repertoire of The Nice compositions, they changed radically when joined by the former Orange Peel and Nosferatu guitarist/vocalist Michael Winzkowski. Upon realising that another band called Karthago existed in Berlin, the name Epsilon was chosen instead. Typical of bands from Marburg (cf. Pell Mell, Frame, etc.) Epsilon drew heavily on classical music in an original and complex Progressive Rock, in a very different way to their British or Italian counterparts, especially so on side one of their debut, which blends in these classical influences in a very unusual and original manner..."

Ash Ra Tempel - Join Inn (1973)

"Join Inn" carries on improvisations, electro acoustic experimentations and space rock. As in their two first classics, inspiration and devotion to the "cosmic" philosophy are always there, apparently continuing with the same effective ingredients. Klaus Schulze who leaved the band after the band's first self titled album is invited for the occasion to provide frantic, rolling and ritual drum rhythms to accompany Gottsching's bluesy improvisations. "Freak 'n' roll" is an experimental free form rock composition of a great quality. The climax progressively rises into a hysteric dimension. The second track is more peaceful and contemplative. The trippy atmosphere gently descending into introspection and serenity. "Jenseits" is a very attractive, seductive tune which combines a penetrate, dreamy synth / guitar structure to female recitations. An intimate tune which culminates ART's work. Original and galvanizing, this album is essential"-PHILIPPE-ProgArchives.

Dr.Dopo Jam - Entree (1973)

"Eclectic best describes this album - a real discovery for me. The combination of instruments is excellent: basic rock instruments plus flute, horns, vibraphone, congas, etc. Heavier jams suddenly transition into lighter and breezier syncopated guitar and conga effortlessly. So many styles are represented here yet they all seem to flow together so well. I really like the way they use the vibraphone and syncopated rhythms to support everything. There are strong hints of Canterbury and Zappa in their humorous approach to what they do." - tallen14218

Ash Ra Tempel - Schwingungen (1972)

"A bit different from their debut because of the presence of vocals. Also Klaus Schulze left, in pursuit of his famous solo career. New drummer Wolfgang Müller is in, along with, of course, guitarist Manuel Göttsching and bassist Hartmut Enke. And for a vocalist, they chose a guy by the name of John L., previously of AGITATION FREE (who got booted out of that band for being too deranged, apparently ASH RA TEMPEL felt the same was as he was given the boot after this album). Talk about an acquired taste, John L.'s voice tends to be harsh and he always sounded out of tune (he reminded me of CAN's "Malcolm Mooney", so you get sort of an idea what you'll be facing here)." - Proghead-ProgArchives

Radiohead - The Bends (1995)

"This is another example of an album that is just so perfect in everyway and doesn't even seem like it was made by humans.
Every song is as memorable, each song has it's own characteristic and any of these songs could have been released as singles.
After their success with Pablo Honey (and the success with Creep), Radiohead composed a selection of more mature music with quite an interesting experimental side.
The result was this album, with some amazing hit singles, amazing chorus and each song an amazing listening experience. And why did they decide to go mental and just start yawning in their late 90's to now material, who knows, but I hope they can see sense and see what a great band they once where.
The first time I had contact with this album was when I leant it out of my local library on tape (I feel like a dinosaur). I then found it in a nick knack shop and got it for a pound. Now if I don't know what's a bargain, then that comes close I feel.

"Lots and lots of lovely Mellotron and organ, backed up by bass, double bass and drums, plus some great tunes and good lyrics make this a classic album. Three of the seven tracks are instrumentals. Dave Lawson's voice lacks some strength and he has to strain sometimes, but actually I don't mind this one bit - it seems to fit with the keyboard sounds.
There are some clever tracks, such as the instrumental 'An English Western' and the song 'What Are You Doing To Me'. The latter has one of my all time favourite lyrics. To top it off, the album has a wonderful cover by Roger Dean. I bought the LP in 1973 and instantly liked the music (those keyboards!), and in 2004 still listen to the CD often. This album is essential." - Fitzcarraldo-ProgArchives

Iceberg - Arc-en-ciel (1979)

"I'm not probably very objective here, since "Arc-en-ciel" is one of my earliest musical references (when I was a little kid, my brother used to play "El caminant nocturn" all the time), but I find this record to be one of the highest achievements in Spanish rock of all times, together with "Sentiments". It is hard to find a 7/4 track that feels as natural as said "El caminant nocturn". The drum solo in "Càntics de la carn" alone is worth the admission price; the powerful drum sets of the final '70s come through in a powerful samba-like unsung song. The remaining tracks ("Riu d'agost", "Embrujo" and "Crisàlide") complete an inspired trip through Catalan, Flamenco and Latin fusion." - chenno3-ProgArchives
