Dice - The Four Riders Of The Apocalypse (1977)

"DICE was a Scandinavian band, gaining an immediate great reputation mainly among musicians. Their music is frequently compared to the major acts in the field of art-rock; GENTLE GIANT, YES, ELP, GENESIS etc. Though they have not existed as a band since the start of the '80's, they still have a quite large number of devoted fans. "Four Riders of the Apocalypse" is definitely worthwhile if you like bands like AMENOPHIS or MIRTHRANDIR. The music follows a theme of sorts, with occasional reprises and repeated rhythms." - ProgArchives

Ithaca - A Game For All Who Know (1973)

"Around the late 60's/early 70's, this English folk-prog trio released four similar albums under four different band names: ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, TOMORROW COME SOME DAY, AGINCOURT and finally ITHACA. ITHACA's music is a combination of pastoral folk rock, psychedelia and progressive rock with gentle male/female vocal interplay. Their style is dreamy, very laid back and flows in a breezy, unassuming fashion. Lee Menelaus in particular, the female vocalist, projects a sweet (very sweet) serene tone yet not at all sappy.
The self-produced "A Game for All Who Know", released in 1973, bears the lighter shades of both West Coast and British psychedelia, with the occasional Mellotron showing a marked early 70's MOODY BLUES influence. The album is made up of six longish tracks of beautiful interwoven songs with quasi-mystical lyrics; these may be a little lightweight in their naïveté but the tunes are melodious and tastefully produced, featuring mainly mandolin, flutes, recorders, classical guitar and autoharp plus some nice tape experiments of added sounds." - Lise (HIBOU)

Iceberg - Coses Nostres (1976)

"Iceberg is one of the best prog acts ever in Spain's rock history. Heavily influences by the fusion trend of Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Iceberg manages to recycle their influences via the incorporation many folk textures in their music - in many places, among the solidly crafted solos and complex counterpoints, you can notice the presence of Catalonian folk and Flamenco touches in some specific melodic lines or harmonies. To a lesser degree, but also there to be easily noticed, there are some symphonic nuances a-la Camel cooking in some keyboard orchestrations and some guitar-keyboard double leads, but as it is, the jazz factor is the most prominent one. "Coses Nostres" is their second album, their first as an exclusively instrumental act - this work marks their maturity as a band, creating a milestone for Spain's fusion scene.." - Cesar Inca-ProgArchives

Duello Madre - Duello Madre (1973)

"DUELLO MADRE was an Italian group that released one album in the seventies. The group consisted of Pippo Trentin (saxophone, flauta), Marco Zoccheddu (electric & acoustic guitar), Bob Callero (bass) and Dede Lo Previte (drums). Many of the band members have been in other Italian groups. Zoccheddu has also been a member of NUOVA IDEA and OSAGE TRIBE, Callero a member of OSAGE TRIBE and IL VOLO, and Lo Previte a member of CIRCUS 2000 and NOVA.
The only album, simply titled "Duello Madre", was released in 1973. It is a jazz oriented, mostly instrumental album. Only the first track includes some minimal vocals. The musicianship in this album is good and it occasionally results in jamming like playing. Nice saxophone playing by Pippo Trentin is most notable. The rhythm section deserves a mention too.
DUELLO MADRE should please fans of jazz-rock, also fans of the English jazz-rock scene." - ProgArchives

Ache - Green Man (1971)

"This Danish band was founded in '68 and featured Torsten Olafsson (bass and vocals), Finn Olafsson (guitar and vocals), Peter Mellin (organ and keyboards) and Glen Fisher (drums and pecussion). They made two albums: "De hombre urbano ('70) and "Green man" ('71). The music is similar to the Early British Progressive Rock Movement (JULIAN'S TREATMENT, RARE BIRD, BEGGAR'S OPERA, ATOMIC ROOSTER), the German Krautrock (early JANE, ELOY, RAMSES, TRIUMVIRAT) and Dutch masters EARTH & FIRE (their early, con-commercial era). The music is based upon splendid keyboardplay (many floods of Hammond organ) and some fiery electric guitar. The first album contains two 'side-long tracks', the atmosphere is typically end Sixties and early Seventies with lots of solos and long, exciting interplay between guitar and keyoards, like jams. The second album includes shorter songs but the climates are in the vein of the first LP. If you listen to this CD, it's incredible that the magnificent keyboardplay is delivered by an unknown Danish musician!" - Erik Neuteboom

Cosmosquad - Cosmosquad (1997)

"COSMOSQUAD is an instrumental progressive rock/metal band from United States that formed in 1997 by Jeff Kollman (guitars), Shane Gaalaas (drums) and Barry Sparks (bass) after some serious jams at a rehearsal studio in Phoenix, Arizona.

Soon after, the band moved to a studio in L.A. to start recording what would become their first release. The self-titled album was released on Kollman's own Marmaduke Records in 1997. In 1998 the band regrouped to record Kollman's solo album "Shedding Skin". The album was considered kind of a continuation of COSMOSQUAD's self titled debut that the band often plays songs of "Shedding Skin" on their live sets." - ProgArchives

Gila - Gila : Free Electric Sound (1971)

"This band was from Stuttgart and managed just two studio albums before splitting. Their guitarist leader Conny Veit will be known latter as collaborator of both POPOL VUH and GURU GURU, but this is another story.
Their first highly ambitious album - and one of the more important albums to come out of Western Germany - had a very odd concept to reflect the group's progression from aggression to communication. Quite a bloody program and I can assure you that they succeed quite well. The music on their debut runs continuously through the tracks is very trippy and atmospheric but not space rock either, In that regard , one thinks of PINK FLOYD. Their second album is very different and depicts the last and worst Indian massacre (native Americans) back in the early 70's.. The live album is posthumous but worthy of them.
In spite of their short discography, GILA is a very important group in the history of Krautrock and highly recommended to anyone looking for adventurous music." - Hugues Chantraine

Høst - Hardt Mot Hardt (1976)

"..The tracks tend to mix a bit of everything. Some tracks lean on the heavy-prog side, while a couple of other tracks feature a small orchestra and symphonic atmospheres. The quality of the music remains high throughout the various changes in style. In fact, the band had real talent for creating catchy riffs, melodies, themes, rhythms, and beautiful vocals. It's hard to find fault anywhere. Overall "Hardt Mot Hardt" will end up pleasing prog fans. But do yourself a favor and check out "På Sterke Vinger" as well. Haikara - Geafar (1974)

"..This second album is still outstanding but less so than their debut. First of all the bonus track are unworthy of the album : it sounds like singles from a much later period (one from 76 and the other from 79 ). If that was the only flaw , I would not let it bother me , but the shorter tracks at the start of side 2 are also weaker both having a female vocal that I find somewhat derangesome (Northettes from Hatfield & the North). The first track of the album is somewhat a little different than what they usually do (rockier) but the rest is well in the line of their debut especially the 14 min title track. Note the absolutely crazy Dali-like sleeve artwork so macabre but somewhat well in line with the music.." - Sean Trane-ProgArchives

Audience - Friends, Friends, Friend (1970)

"Listed under Folk Rock, AUDIENCE consisted of Howard Werth, vocals/guitar, Keith Gemmell, sax/clarinet/flute, Tony Connor, drums and myself on bass. We ran from 1969 to 1972 and, although featuring acoustic guitar, were not exactly folky. I think we were more usually classified as art rock. When band folded, Howard joined The DOORS as replacement for Jim Morrison then went solo, Keith joined STACKRIDGE and later The PASADENA ROOF ORCHESTRA and I joined The NASHVILLE TEENS, then Jonathan Kelly's OUTSIDE. Tony joined HOT CHOCOLATE, where he has been ever since. The band has recently reformed with only one personnel change - that of John Fisher on drums.
We produced albums as per your list. A recent addition is "Unchained", which is a best-of with two additional unreleased tracks. The most lauded album was "House on the Hill". - Trevor Williams-Audience

Led Zeppelin - Presence (1976)

"Presence is the seventh studio album by English rock band Led Zeppelin, released by Swan Song Records on 31 March 1976. The album was written and recorded during a tumultuous time in the band's history, as Robert Plant was recuperating from serious injuries he had sustained in a recent car accident. The album received mixed reviews from critics, and is one of the lowest sellers in the band's catalogue. It was Led Zeppelin's second album to be composed of completely original material, after Houses of the Holy." - Wikipedia

Goblin - Suspiria (1977)

"Goblin isnt so well know but there soundtrack work is amazing! Suspiria, a movie but italian horror legend Dario Argento, is a dark and dreamy film with a very hallucinagenic feel , partly due to the music. Today in horror movies its all just orchestras and strings but this type of electronic music really sets the mood and is in my opinion creepier than the stuff today. Claudio Simonetti is an excellent musician and the band have put out some amazing stuff. What really surprises me is how all their songs sound so different and they never get boring or drift into the same old thing. An excellent soundtrack and an amazing album." - YesGoblin-ProgArchives

Grobschnitt - Ballermann (1974)

"This album took a big step further into prog. They incorporated some elements of Yes (vocal harmonies) and Genesis (symphonic texture, keyboard work) in their style but they don't sound derivative at all. Their soundwritting definitely improved on this album. They also started to be funnier. They are known for making sudden outbursts of wit. Some people just don't get their unique jokes e.g. funny intro, caricature singing and speed up effect in "Sahara" and some inserts in other tracks. Their attitude is similar to ZAPPA, who thinks that humor belongs in music. Some like it some don't. First two tracks are maybe weaker but other tracks are all outstanding. Especially beloved by fans is the epic "Solar Music". To sum it up. An excellent prog effort of a hard prog band successfully transforming into symphonic!" - terramystic-ProgArchives

Porcupine Tree - Up The Downstair (1993)

"Following the lucid, experimental psychedelic debut, ON THE SUNDAY OF LIFE, Porcupine Tree's mastermind, Steven Wilson set out to create a more cohesive, flowing and melodic journey that would push the listener into the deep depths of conciousness and thought. Whislt more accessible than SUNDAY, DOWNSTAIR was developed as a single flowing narrative, looking at issues ranging from LSD use, to death, love and loss. The result is a beautifully textured, leisurely paced album accented by driving riffs, swirling keyboards and several Floydian inspired guitar solos. As with SUNDAY, Steven Wilson composed the majority of the music, with some lyrics credited to Wilson's friend, Alan Duffy. However, unlike SUNDAY, Wilson gained immeasurably from the input of Richard Barbieri on Keyboards/Synthesisers, and Colin Edwin on Bass, giving DOWNSTAIR a more controlled and focused style, whilst still maintaining the free-flowing psychedelia often found in early Porcupine Tree.." - Any Colour You Like-ProgArchives

"For me, the best GENTLE GIANT album. One of the great, original and creative bands, and their debut album is a very good example. Really, not too many bands in progressive music history could make so complex interplay between instruments and voices, keeping the beauty of each piece. Great musicians and superb compositions. Although many people doesn't consider this album as the best of GG, I think this is the mandatory start point to understand the band. A must have." - Marcelo-ProgArchives

Cressida - Asylum (1971)

"..Both CRESSIDA albums are excellent and very rare now (both were original Vertigo "Swirls"). Their self-titled debut is an early seventies forgotton classic with delicate vocals, gobs of organ and acoustic guitar. CRESSIDA's second "Asylum" is the best of the genre represented by BEGGARS' OPERA, SPRING, FANTASY, FRUUPP, and many more. The combinations of instruments used for this album featuring the flute and different keyboard configurations accompanied by acoustic guitar works. This album, though, was by far the better one, with long instrumental passages and more elaborate arrangements. Thus, if you're interested, "Asylum" is a recommended starter of great early British rock. DEFINITELY A CLASSIC!" - ProgArchives

Biglietto Per L'Inferno - Biglietto Per L'Inferno (1974)

"Considered by many as being one of the best expressions of Italian progressive music. After have been known at the Festival Be-In of Naples (June 1973), they recorded one single album with the same band name, released by Trident, revealing great musical passages mainly using synthesizers.
They attended several Italian music festivals with fair results thanks mainly to singer, Claudio Canali, who moved through the stage, with great scenic approach. After disbanded a second effort was only released in 1992, titled "Il tempo della semina", containing material recorded in 1974.
Their debut is considered a small jewel, blending symphonic prog with hard rock. Influences range from GENTLE GIANT, to JETHRO TULL and BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO. Their second album "Il Tempo Della Semina" should appeal to fans of PFM, FOCUS and BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST. It finds the band taking a more commercial path, mostly abandoning the hard rock element." - Symphonic Age, Atkingani

Aunt Mary - Janus (1973)

"There has not been many truly progressive albums made in Norway,at least not in the golden years, but among the few this is without doubt the best. The music is like old Genesis mixed together with Deep Purple.Bjørn Christiansen`s guitarplaying is very nice and got a great deal of blues in it.The moog plays an important role on this abum and the organ also appears in a fine way.Kjetil Stensvik is a legend in Norway when it comes to drumming and Svein Gundersen surely follow up his fellow musicians. I`m not to fond of the song "Mr.Kaye" but on this album several songs are stitch together so i guess it has its place. "for all eternity " is my favorite. Arzachel - Arzachel (1969)

"Comprised of what was then the band URIEL, this was the earliest formation of Steve HILLAGE and Dave STEWART. ARZACHEL had two things which helped transition it to be CD era: the music is a head above most other psych rarities, and the four musicians later achieved marginal success within the '70s progressive rock "Canterbury scene".
The record itself featured some of the most explosive psychedelia by an English group. The sound of sustained keyboard and guitar passages are full blown drawn-out psychedelia of the highest order, think EGG, GONG, NATIONAL HEALTH, CARAVAN etc. Collectors of rare psychedelia recognize ARZACHEL's sole LP as being one of the most desired (and pricey) relics from the late '60s." - ProgArchives

Delirium - Dolce Acqua (1971)

"This is one of the most beautiful touches for me with really classic Italian Prog. It contains an excellent mix of Jazz, Prog and Folk. They used rather many musical instruments, like keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar and particularly flute. Electric guitar didn't find a place among them, but their Prog Music was based on expressive flute and inventive keyboard playing. And don't forget to mention beautiful vocal parts, which I like so much! Most of the songs were written in rather light melodic manner, typical for 70's Italian Prog with ma. I would like to mark the most expressive part of the album Movimento II (Dubbio) with real Prog elements and strong syncopes. But at the same time, Johnnie Sayre (Il Perdono) contains some psych elements. The last song on my CD is a pleasant ballad Jesahel, which had great success in 70's.
All the music and lyric is written by well-known tandem Ivano Fossati-Mario Magenta. The first one became a very popular figure in Italian music, and he left the band after their successful release." - Mr. O-ProgArchives

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV (1971)

"Led Zeppelin IV is the fourth album by English rock band Led Zeppelin, released on November 8, 1971. It has no easily expressed official title and is commonly referred to as Led Zeppelin IV. Atlantic Records catalogues have used the names Four Symbols and The Fourth Album, and it is also variously referred to as Untitled, Runes, Sticks, Man with Sticks, Four and ZoSo (after the appearance of the first character or symbol printed on the LP label). Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page frequently refers to the album as Led Zeppelin IV in interviews, while singer Robert Plant thinks of it as "the Fourth Album, that's it." The album is one of the best-selling albums in history, with over 23 million units sold in the United States alone. Estimates for worldwide figures usually top 30 million units." - Wikipedia

Goblin - Profondo Rosso (1975)

"Album released in 1975 "Profondo Rosso". The first work as GOBLIN is Dario Argento's sound track. Music such as numbers such as technical jazz-rock and TUBULAR BELLS and beautiful works has been enhanced. The complete edition can be obtained now. I like this movie. It is a masterpiece of horror movie, but I do not think it is frightning as same as "The silence of the lambs" or "Night of the living dead".But the murder scene is really equalles to Hitchcock's showerroom murder. I love Stanley Kubrick,Charles Chaplin,Akira Kurosawa, and many more movie directors, too." - braindamage-ProgArchives

Cressida - Cressida (1970)

"CRESSIDA were an excellent band of early British symphonic progressive scene. Their sound is mostly dominated by the most beautiful and symphonic Hammond organ (dirty, and mellow), piano, bass, guitar, and drums. The instrumental sections are equally good, and tend to be typical of early 70s English prog rock. Thanks to the captivating atmospheres and the technical ability of the musicians. Similar bands include FANTASY, BEGGARS' OPERA, CIRKUS, GRACIOUS, and SPRING. Both CRESSIDA albums are excellent and very rare now (both were original Vertigo "Swirls"). Their self-titled debut is an early seventies forgotton classic with delicate vocals, gobs of organ and acoustic guitar.." - ProgArchives

Ozric Tentacles - Erpsongs (1985)

"This is the very first release from the OZRICS. As a matter of fact, they weren't signed to any label. Let's examine what's going on: it's the mid 1980s, the kind of space rock bands like GONG and HAWKWIND were doing the decade before is now long out of fashion. Record labels once sympathetic to that kind of music (like Virgin, which GONG recorded for) turned their backs on that kind of music and started including punk and new wave acts on their roster. OZRIC TENTACLES knew at the time they wouldn't stand a snowball's chance in hell finding a record label to release their material, so they took matters in to their own hands and released cassettes that were produced and released all by themselves (until the time their reputation spreaded far enough, they would get a record deal, in 1989, that is, but that's later on)." - Proghead-ProgArchives

Grobschnitt - Grobschnitt (1972)

"Formed in 1970 the band existed till 1989, GROBSCHNITT (which translates to ROUGH CUT) was the best German band from the mid-Seventies (ELOY were then in a more PINK FLOYD... and ambient style). All of the members of the band adopted pseudonyms, namely "Eroc", "Mist", "Wildschwein", "Lupo" and "Popo". The band was created by Joachim "Eroc" Ehrig (drums, percussion), Stefan "Wildschwein" Daneliak (guitars & vocals), and Gerd-Otto "Lupo" Kühn (guitar, vocals). This nucleus was later completed by Wolgang "Popo" Jäger (bass) and Volker "Mist" Kahrs (keyboards, Mellotron, synthesizers). They were best known as a clone of YES (symphonic progressive group), but they also explored other progressive rock styles (either psychedelic prog or more cohesive "Krautrock" with some stunning instrumental passages that will be familiar to anyone into the likes of MAN, AMON DUUL II, WISHBONE ASH and many similar bands). Their sound was characterized by sometimes long suites allowing ambitious composition developments, with intermingled themes, rhythms, climates changes and symphonic passages. A VERY COMPELLING BRAND OF MUSICAL MOODS: haunting melodies, funny voices (by Eroc), wonderful guitar work, great synthesizer sounds, strange drumming/effects man, and sophisticated arrangements. This eclectic German band became one of the most popular live acts in German history." - ProgArchives

Gong - Radio Gnome Invisible Part 1 : Flying Teapot (1973)

"GONG is a Space/Canterbury Rock group formed by Australian guitarist (formerly of SOFT MACHINE) Daevid Allan in Paris, France in 1968. He did not do it alone though, he & his wife, Gilli Smyth are the whole nucleus of that band with numerous band line-ups. "Magick Brother, Mystic Sister" is GONG's first release & the line up consists of: Didier Malherbe (sax), Christian Tritsch (guitar), Pip Pyle (drums) & of course, Daevid Allan (guitar & lead vocals) while his wife Gilli performed the spacey vocals. GONG's second release: "Camembert Electrique" is the beginning of Allan's ideas of Pot Head pixies, Radio Gnome's, & Octave Doctor's featured on later albums of "The Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy" along with the Protagonist Zero The Hero, which consisted of "Flying Teapot" (1972), "Angel's Egg" (1973) & "You" (1974). After "Camembert Electrique" release also saw a new line-up & a steady one. The line-up consisted of: Didier Malherbe (sax) Mike Howlett (bass), Pierre Moerlen (drums), Steve Hillage (guitar), Tim Blake (synthesizers) & of course, Daevid (vocals & guitar) & Gilli (space vocals). This line-up would last until "You". When Allen, Smyth, & Blake departed due to dissatisfaction of being an instrumental band this led Pierre to be the leader & released "Shamal" in 1976. Hillage lost faith in the group & departed as well." - Alexander Vogel

Gomorrha - I Turned To See Whose Voice It Was (1972)

"Formed at the end of the 60's, Gomorrha rised from the German progressive rock scene thanks to the help of the producer and sound engineer Conny Plank. The band original line up includes Helmut Pohl (drums) and Eberhard Krietsch (ogan, bass) with Ad Oschel and Ali Claudi at the guitars. They released their first album in 1970. The second recording "trauma" (1971) really marks a new step in the development of Gomorrha's original song. They distinguish with a dense heavy psych rock experience punctuated by organ dominated sequences. It now includes lyrics in English and a lead singer in the name of Peter Otten. In 1972 they release what will be considered as their summit "I Turned To See Whose Voice It Was"; An adventurous album featuring catchy instrumental jams, krautrock's original psych / spacey mood, pastoral flute parts and heavy guitar riffs. The concept of this release is focused on the apocalypse theme and the book of revelation. They suddenly split up in 1973 after the publication of two memorable documents of German independent rock." - ProgArchives

Supertramp - Crime Of The Century (1974)

"The sweetest of all the crimes of any century. My first album ever acquired and still one of my favorites and I have bought thousands of them. From the harmonica intro of School to the fade-out of the title-track this is a major work of art. This album was capital to me in my teens, as most of us related to the story of Rudy's alienation to his surrounding world (that track is the center piece of the concept). It is easier to point out the one slightly weaker number than list the outstanding ones : If Everyone is the only imperfection in here but it is still essential to the rest. It also took me some time to accept the wanker chorus of Dreamer, but the incredible bass behind made it pass." - Sean Trane-ProgArchives

Pete Sinfield - Still (1973)

"Peter SINFIELD is probably the best lyricist ever. Nobody has been able to transmit such intense emotions with words. Only his first work, "In The Court Of The Crimson King" deserves this title. It goes from the panic and history of "21st Century Schizoid Man" to the sadness and anger of "Epitaph", the criticism of the stupid ness of the Hippy movement in "I talk To The Wind", or the private and intimate love and passion of "Moonchild". An amazing and unbelievable work that he continued over the years, lets mention his irony in "Happy Family", the isolate ness of "Islands", the lascivity of "Ladies Of The Road". Just amazing how far away he has been able to go in the transmission of so many different emotions." - The Schizoid Winkler

Quiet Sun - Mainstream (1975)

"QUIET SUN was first formed in 72 but later disbanded as various members evolved into other groups. As a side project to ROXY MUSIC, guitarist Phil Manzanera teamed up with Bill Mc Cormick (of MATCHING MOLE fame), Dave Jarrett and Charles Hayward ( ex-HIGH TIDE and future GONG, and future "touche-à-tout" in the early 90's) reformed QUIET SUN and made this sole album called Mainstream that defides any classifications/categorizations. With the help of Brian Eno, this album is full of superb interplay with long tracks every member writing two tracks except for Mc Cormick only one. Later on, Manzanera and McCormick will form the 801 group that will also release two albums.
Recommended to progheads liking UFO's from the 70's. This is almost one of those lost gems except that it was never lost." - Hugues Chantraine

Matching Mole - Matching Mole (1971)

"Upon leaving SOFT MACHINE in 1971 after their "Fourth" album, Robert Wyatt decided to form a new band which he named MATCHING MOLE (from the French translation of SOFT MACHINE). He recruited Dave Sinclair of CARAVAN to play keybaords along with guitarist Phil Miller (ex-DELIVERY) and QUIET SUN bassist Bill MacCormick. They made two albums both released in 1972, a self-titled and "Little Red Record", the latter featuring Dave MacRae on keys in place of Sinclair. Phil Miller soon left to join HATFIELD AND THE NORTH, and Wyatt was planning on recording a third album in 1973, but due to his unfortunate accident this never came to pass, leaving the band permanently disbanded. The two records, however, are outstanding examples of what was great about much of the Canterbury scene of the time - superb, challenging musicianship coupled with a quirky sense of humor - and in the case of Matching Mole's second record, a bit of political commentary as well. Highly recommeneded obviously for fans of SOFT MACHINE and Wyatt's solo work, as well as other Canterbury scene artists." - ProgArchives

Haikara - Haikara (1972)

"In English their names would be Stork and these Finns fly as high as one of those birds. This quintet made some of the best and most complex music from Scandinavian countries on their first two albums sometimes making you think of CRIMSON and TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI, but they sing in Finnish. Their third album was a private (self-produced) pressing affair that veered to a much heavier rock. Recently, two more albums have been released and the rumour has it that they are in the same vein although only their multi-instrumentalist leader Vesa Lattunen remains from the 70's line-up. Nevertheless their first two albums should be considered by progheads as minor classic and are likely to appeal to everyone concerned." - Hugues Chantraine

"One of the most important underground hard rock band from Britain and also a very influential group , although they never managed much commercial success. Their sound in their two historical album can be likened to BLUE CHEER or STEPPENWOLF ( but with lenghty improvisations in some tracks) and is sometimes mentioned as one of the first example of Heavy Metal music , some progheads on this site even going as far as citing them as the grandfather of Prog Metal." - Hugues Chantraine

Hellebore - Il Y A Des Jours (1985)

"Right off the tee "Il y a Des Jours" ensconced itself next to my desert island discs. By the second spin I was teetering on the precipice of obsession, resolving in a life long ambition to track down the vinyl (limited to 1007 copies). Trekking back to '85, Hellebore knocked out a damn fine album throughout the 'depression' years of prog (I personally don't think those years were so shabby). Thankfully these tidings never hunched Hellebore's sound, still willing risk it all in the highly unpopular avant-garde field. Undoubtedly they studied the early works of RIO pioneers, sporting tell tale signs of Zeuhl, RIO, free-jazz, vintage electronics, with a sprinkling of new wave. On the surface we're confronted by a dangerously clam face, while out back proceedings are roughened up with a little of the old dissonance. For some this album may never click, but to others it will be like donning your favourite pair of trousers. Recommend to lovers of the strange." - Apsalar-ProgArchives

Pink Floyd - More (1969)

"Pink Floyd's soundtrack from the Barbet Schroeder movie 'More' (a masterpiece) is one of their best albums ever, and one of their strangest - because it's not a real album, but a soundtrack, of course. Here, you can hear a pre-grunge song (The Nile Song), a hard-rocker (Ibiza Bar, performed by Gilmour, and which appears in the movie when the hero, Stefan, is in a...Paris bar. But the movie takes almost all of its place in Ibiza), a gothic-style song (Cirrus Minor), a flamenco pastiche (A Spanish Piece), 7 minutes of very experimental and silentful music (Quicksilver), a blues (More Blues), a slow (Green Is The Colour), and one of the most psychedelistic Pink Floyd songs ever (Cymbaline). Argent - Circus (1975)

"5 Stars. Not burdened with any particular affection for the prior Argent line up prior to recording this-I've enjoyed this from the first time I heard this 30 or so years ago to now. I still delight in the outstanding harmony singing the quality of which is not really challenged anywhere else in the Prog world as far as i'm concerned. Fab drumming, rocking piano works and a must for any serious progger. The individual instrument sound is upfront and near and gets better the louder it's played. I still listen to this album often and enjoy it every time. Very few bands will get near this heart felt, passionate, rocking quality. 5 stars for this album-always has been, always will be!!!" - johnnythelowery-ProgArchives

David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World (1970)

"The Man Who Sold the World is the third studio album by David Bowie. It was originally released on Mercury Records in November 1970 in the United States and in April 1971 in the UK. The album was Bowie's first with the nucleus of what would become the "Spiders from Mars", the backing band made famous by The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in 1972. Though author David Buckley has described the singer's previous record Space Oddity as "the first Bowie album proper", NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray have said of The Man Who Sold the World, "this is where the story really starts."" - Wikipedia

Returning to Gentle Giant's fourth album after any kind of lengthy absence, it's astonishing just how little Octopus has dated. Often written off at the time as a pale reflection of the truly gargantuan steps being taken by the likes of Jethro Tull and Barclay James Harvest, the band's closest relatives in the tangled skein of period prog, Gentle Giant often seemed more notable for its album art than its music. Octopus, however, marries the two seamlessly, with the cover speaking for itself, of course. And the mood continues within, the deliciously convoluted opening "The Advent of Panurge" itself riding waves of sonic tentacles as Derek Shulman's guitar shrieks short but so effective bursts around the thundering bass and, occasionally, churchy organ." - Wikipedia

Aunt Mary - Loaded (1972)

"One of the early and by many considered to be one of Norways definitely best prog bands. Their music is a mix of heavy hard-rocking tunes, combined with clear influences from the symphonic genre. The more symphonic sound however didn't appeared until their third, and last studio album, "Janus". A great concept-album to start with. If you want the more thundering sounds coming from AUNT MARY, look for 1972s "Loaded". High-skilled musicians combined with good, creative melodies makes AUNT MARY a important Norwegian band to become acquainted with." - ProgArchives

Renaissance - Prologue (1972)

"This is the first Renaissance album with Annie Haslam on the lead vocals. It is definitely a complex & refined piano oriented album, although the tracks are loaded with other instruments. The electric and acoustic guitars do not take so much room. The bass is not as powerful & bottom as on the next album "Ashes are burning", but it must all the same not be neglected. And more, this bass is very well played and quite refined. The other musicians provide excellent backing vocals, and Annie often just gracefully sings without word.." - greenback-ProgArchives

Flyte - Dawn Dancer (1979)

"The music of FLYTE is very good, they had great ideas but weren't able to paste them all with absolute coherence, maybe they were too ambitious, but there's a lot of enjoyable material and mellotron. Harmonium - Harmonium (1974)

"Harmonium is not only a group; it is an experience. It is the wake of a people, coming from old times to modernity with magic noise and sensitive words. Melancoly is the word if such a word can be described: the image of something that has been and will never be again. Harmonium is THE group of the 70's in Québec country and its work is not only musical, but also political. It represents not only the aspiration of the people to be free but also nostalgia and deception of a new world that is not always what you wanted it to be.
When you first listen to this album, you may not even notice that they do not have a drummer. Why bother? Why would this band need a drummer with so much rhythm and imagination? You have to focus on the words, on the stories in each of the songs. Enter this world and when you will leave you will be someone else." - belz-ProgArchives
