Steve Vai - Sex & Religion (1993)

"Sex and Religion is a Steve Vai album presented under the name of simply "Vai" and before then "Light Without Heat" but had to be changed due to copyright issues to the original name. It features Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band vocalist and guitarist Devin Townsend on vocals before he started either one of his own bands. Townsend also co-wrote the track "Pig", as well as "Just Cartilage" which was left off the final album. Vai also worked with Desmond Child on the track "In My Dreams with You"." - Wikipedia

King Crimson - In The Wake Of Poseidon (1970)

"In the Wake of Poseidon (1970) is the second album by the progressive rock group King Crimson. By the time this album was released, the band had already undergone their first change in lineup, however they still maintained much of the style of their first album, In the Court of the Crimson King.
Also like their first album, the mood of this album often changes from serene to chaotic. The album opens with a poetic vocal piece called "Peace – A Beginning", which is reprised instrumentally in the middle of the album and vocally again at the end. The longest track on the album is a chaotic instrumental piece called "The Devil’s Triangle", which was built around quotations from Gustav Holst's "Mars: Bringer of War" from his The Planets Suite. King Crimson would have called the piece Mars, as they had performed it on tour in the 1969 lineup, but were forbidden by the composer's legal estate..." - Wikipedia

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin I (1969)

"Rising from the ashes of his old band the Yardbirds, session guitarist Jimmy Page formed Led Zeppelin, one of the most powerful, influential, and enduring British bands to emerge in the '60s. Despite the presence of such classic thrash-o-ramas as "Good Times Bad Times" and "Communication Breakdown," what set Led Zeppelin apart was the depth and range of their music. Their sound was bathed in the blues, from rootsy covers of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me" and "I Can't Quit You Baby," to the crunching rhythm changes of "Dazed And Confused." Few guitarists before or since possessed Page's sense of pacing and dynamics, as exemplified by the traditional acoustic folk elements framing the arena gestures on "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," and the raga-flavored acoustic mystery of "Black Mountain Side." These elements would continue to evolve on subsequent albums, leading to some of Led Zeppelin's greatest moments."

King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969)

"In the Court of the Crimson King is the title of the 1969 debut album by the British progressive rock group King Crimson. The album reached No.5 on the British charts. The album was remastered and re-released in the late 1990s, and given a subsequent remastering after the original masters were found in the Virgin vaults, which in turn was released in 2004. Barry Godber painted the instantly recognisable album cover, and died less than a year after the album's release."

Joe Satriani - Not Of This Earth (1986)

"Not of This Earth is the first full album by instrumental rock solo artist Joe Satriani. Numerous tracks off this album are still played live by Satriani.
A few features distinguish this album from his others. Electronic drums are used throughout, instead of Satriani's usual acoustic drums. The first track "Not of This Earth" utilizes an unusual compositional technique he titles "Pitch Axis Theory", which consists of shifting modes underneath a pedal tone (in this case E). "The Headless Horseman" is a piece performed entirely by left and right-handed finger tapping." - Wikipedia

"Vai. One of the greatest. Unlike many guitar albums this is actually fun to listen to and is probably Vai's best. For the Love of God is one of the most intense displays of virtuosity ever recorded. Essential to all guitar fans and recomended to prog fans for it's pure chopsmanship." - King Crimson776-ProgArchives

Brainchild - Healing Of The Lunatic Owl (1970)

"Brainchild is a septet that recorded their sole album Healing Of The Lunatic Owl in western London in 1970 on the A&M label. The album contains sizzling brass rock, which must rank among the best of the genre (early Chicago and If), but also with the much more obscure and even more brilliant Warm Dust and Galliard. Brainchild's line-up was basically your standard prog quartet, plus a three-man wind instrument section, including flute, sax, trumpet and trombone." - Hugues Chantraine

Steve Vai - Flexable (1984)

"STEVE VAI is one of the greatest guitar players of all time, studied master classes under JOE SATRIANI, and student of the Berklee School of Music, Vai later was invited to join FRANK ZAPPA's band by ZAPPA himself. He was in ZAPPA's group, playing very complex pieces, sometimes even transcribing out ZAPPA's solos and music just to play them live (something he had done in his final year at university according to room-mate Happy The Man's Stan Whitaker). VAI was given the name "Little Italian Virtuoso" and sometimes "Stunt Guitarist" by ZAPPA, because of VAI's technical skill and sounds produced. VAI surely is an incredible guitarist. In 1984 VAI went out on his own and started creating his own albums. VAI also joined ALCATRAZZ and DAVID LEE ROTH to create hard rock music in the vein of VAN HALEN. VAI in 1993 created his rock unit called VAI featuring DEVIN TOWNSEND, T.M. STEVENS and another ZAPPA alumni TERRY BOZZIO. G3 tours also ensued, featuring VAI and SATRIANI and a new guitarist each year, notably ROBERT FRIPP and JOHN PETRUCCI. Since then other solo albums have been issued and VAI has continued to innovate and impress as a great composer and incredible guitar player." - vai.com

Bodkin - Bodkin (1972)

"BODKIN were a Scottish quintet that released a self-titled album in 1972. They made a classic-sounding, rough-edged heavy progressive rock with the emphasis on Doug Rome's Hammond organ and complimented by Mick Riddle's guitar, Bill Anderson's bass, Dick Sneddon on drums and the cool wailing of Zeik Hume.
Somewhat more jam-oriented than contemporaries such as ATOMIC ROOSTER or URIAH HEEP and not quite as hard-hitting, BODKIN nevertheless delivered spirited rock music with energetic interplay between guitar and organ, fine musicianship, and distractingly good compositions from the 21 year-old Doug Rome.
A very palatable blend of dark organ-rock and dirty blues, Bodkin will surely please listeners interested in the murky and mysterious early years of the Heavy Prog scene and anyone seeking rare prog." - Atavachron-ProgArchives

"This is an astoundingly consistent album loaded with great songs and many hits that would once again send Peter into yet another direction in his career. He was just getting better and better with each release, and this was his best yet. Music like this never gets old or tiresome; it's timeless and ageless because of its originality, eternal freshness, and open ended approach that appealed to such a huge cross section of listeners worldwide. Peter Gabriel - 4/Security (1982)

"Peter Gabriel's "Security" is a very revealing album. By that I don't mean that it reveals anything we didn't know about PG, but instead it unveils the true character of many so-called "prog" music fans.
Granted, music is one of the most subjective art forms and no single piece of music will appeal to everyone. Knowing that, I still find it difficult to believe that any "progressive" music fan would give this record anything less than four stars. Well, that's not true; I'm scratching my bald head in disbelief that anyone would DARE give it anything less than FIVE STARS!" - wbiphoto-ProgArchives

Peter Gabriel - 3/Melt (1980)

"Another masterpiece of the Genius of Peter Gabriel. The beginning is "Intruder". Very serious, the affrican percussion along with some sound like an old opening door. Games without frontier is really nice, the lyrics are just fantastic. Biko is also really good. This album is so good that when I was in Germany for the first time I also bought the German version in which the genius sings in German. German does not adapt so well to this tracks. So for the first time I recommend the English version. It was a really pity that Peter did not do this in Spanish. I think it will not sound as good as in English. Very good!!" - amontes-ProgArchives

Blackwater Park - Dirt Box (1972)

"Blackwater Park is an obscure band that emerged from the Berlin underground scene. They released their unique album "Dirt Box" in 1971, published on BASF in 1972. The group delivers a captivating, effective bluesy-heavy rock "trip" with lot of incisive guitar riffs, progressive Hammond Organ's arrangements, melodic heavy vocals and psychedelic effects that are part of the mix. (Accessible) kraut power band whose work is essential for collectors. "Dirt Box" has been recently reissued on CD by "Second Battle"." - ProgArchives

Bubu - Anabelas (1978)

"This Argentine group plays very intricate and original music. Along with the traditional rock set-up (guitar, bass, and drums), the band featured a violonist, flutist, saxophonist, and pianist. Their music is complex, energetic, and diabolical in a KING CRIMSON-ish sort of way. Influences are varied (classic, jazz, rock, folk) but make up quite an interesting blend.
"Anabelas" consists of three long compositions, and features mostly instrumental music that sounds like a combination of early KING CRIMSON and ANGLAGARD. For those who are into more intricate prog, there is plenty of dissonance and structural complexity to delight, but is still a PHENOMENAL album." - ProgArchives

Peter Gabriel - 1/Car (1977)

"Gabriel started his solo carreer with a great album, to compare his solo work with Genesis material is not really fair to Gabriel, since that's another time another story and another direction.
the album distigueshes itself by good melodies, and a huge variety in styles, ranging from the Queen styled vaudeville (Excuse me) to some David Bowie type of glam (Modern Love), though that is more based on the Fripp guitar than on the title which of course reminds you of Bowie, but it's of course another song. Some Genesis style also pasts, mostly because of his typical voice, but the music also draws back on some of the music of The lamb (Humdrum, Here comes The Flood and Slowburn)." - tuxon-ProgArchives
